What is AS2:
AS2 (Applicability Standard 2) is an EDI standard created to ensure an adequate level of security for data transmitted over the internet. Although it was developed specifically for EDI, it can be used to transfer any type of file, including XML.
Benefits:
AS2 allows direct transmission between various Trading Partners, eliminating the need to rely on an expensive "VAN (Value Added Network) Operator" to manage data exchange.
Functioning:
AS2 enables secure data transmission over the internet and document exchange through the HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) or its more secure version HTTPS. Security is ensured through encryption and digital signing, using a format called S/MIME (Secure Multi-Purpose Internet Mail Extension) and using MDN receipts (Message Disposition Notifications): the MDN receipts contain information about the status of the message transmission, thereby ensuring "non-repudiation," preventing denial of having received the message. To start a data exchange, partners exchange certain information (public key, AS2 ID, AS2 URL, and used ports), the AS2 software stays on standby for incoming messages and takes care of automatically sending outgoing messages. Before being sent, messages are encrypted with the public key of the trading partner to whom the message is being sent and signed with one's own private key. Upon receipt, the trading partner will use their private key to decrypt, and an MDN receipt will be automatically generated and sent as a confirmation of receipt. The MDN receipt will be signed using the trading partner's private key and encrypted with your public key.
